Confessions of a SWITS ASL Interpreter

My SWITS Experience

ASL Interpreter SWITSMy name is Angela Hoag and I joined the SWITS team in September. As a newly certified ASL interpreter, I wanted to get out there and gain experience, but I also wanted support and guidance. Going completely “freelance” would mean that I would not have support if I had a question. I wanted someone I could go to in order to ask questions and get answers. Back in September, I met with Ginny Cesar (SWITS HR Manager) and was offered a job with SWITS.

Over the past two months, I have learned so much! SWITS has provided me with the flexibility to accept assignments I feel comfortable with; there have been opportunities to work with different language registers; and opportunities to work in different settings. I am learning every day about how expectations vary according to the setting. And it is wonderful to feel supported by the SWITS staff and interpreters that I have met.

The ASL scheduler has been a huge support. I can call on her anytime to get answers to my questions, obtain addresses, and get things explained. She is funny, friendly, and smart! I appreciate her guidance and support. She is flexible and understanding. Scheduling has been great. I can work around my kids’ school concerts, activities, and events. I can work days, nights, or whenever I am available.

Overall, my experience has been positive and I am pleased to be working with a company that supports and recognizes the needs of an ASL interpreter. I look forward to learning more every day with continued support from the SWITS team. I am pleased that they hired a great office assistant in Kyle Schwent. He is a deaf individual who knows deaf culture and is friendly and helpful too! To me it shows that SWITS supports the deaf community.

If you are an ASL interpreter, and you are looking for a great place to work, I would suggest contacting SWITS to see what they are looking for. SWITS may be just what you need!!!
