Cost: $500 – SWITS staff interpreters may qualify for free training
Scholarships also available (see below)

Prerequisites:
Be at least 18 years of age
Provide proof of high school diploma (or equivalent) or a higher degree
Provide proof of competency in English AND one other language*
*Consult Appendix A of the Equal Footing Program Manual for examples

The Equal Footing for LEP Persons medical and community interpreter training seminar is a 60-hour course. Class will be held every Tuesday from 5-8pm and every Thursday from 5-9pm. Click here to register.

Instructor Saul Arteaga provides participants with valuable information about the interpreting profession and supervises interpreting practice in a learning environment.Throughout the interactive course, participants will learn about the following topics:

  • modes of interpreting
  • NCIHC and IMIA codes of ethics
  • role of the interpreter
  • best practices
  • interpreting in different settings
  • managing the interpreting session
  • on-site, telephone, and video remote interpreting
  • interpreter safety and protocol

Participants will practice and implement interpreting techniques in small groups, listen to and critique recordings of interpreting scripts, and record and critique their own renditions. Students who complete all course requirements will receive a certificate of completion.

Registration deadline: July 24th, 2018

An essay scholarship contest will be held for students representing languages of lesser diffusion. $250 and $500 scholarships are available. Winners will be reimbursed upon course completion.
