Title: Deaf Culture and History

Presenter: Teri Hedding, M.A., CDI

Description:

The Deaf community is a close-knit community with strong roots to ASL and Deaf Culture. Throughout history, repeated attempts were made to dismantle the Deaf community due to misconceptions. Despite years of oppression and discrimination, the Deaf community continues to thrive as the awareness of their pride of ASL and Deaf Culture is demonstrated loud and clear worldwide.

In this workshop, the participants will learn about the role and history of ASL in the Deaf community and how the language shaped the Deaf Culture in the Deaf community. Several major events that tried to wipe the Deaf community will also be shared. By the end of the workshop, it is with the hopes that the participants will view the Deaf culture with new eyes that they will become strong allies for the Deaf community.
